Interesting 17th Century Cup-Hilt Rapier, #3224 Edged Weapons
A Good Antique Pierced and Chiseled Cup-Hilt Rapier Sword, circa. 17th century. 30" double edge blade with decorative engraving and maker marked within the single 8.5" fuller 'FREDREICO PICHINO'. Cast brass cup hilt pierced with high relief decoration and motto's 'FREDREICO III AUSTRIA 1471, PRO DEO PATRIA' (Latin, For God & Country); flanked by a depiction of 'Crucifixion of Jesus' on the left and a 'CROWNED Skull over Crossed Bones'; and a 'Sword on top of a CROWNED Star' just above the center medallion; brass guard in the form of chain links; rounded spiral bar terminating in a pair of strait quillons swelling and flattening out with flutes towards the ends which matches the steel pommel, (one quillon end missing). Twisted wire grip. 38.5" overall. Nice Deep age patina. A very interesting sword that should be further researched...
