A Good Antique Japanese Tanto

PLEASE NOTE:  I know a bit more than most but I am NOT an expert regarding Japanese blades.  The study of the subject is very sophisticated and the collector community will always have their own opinions regarding age, maker, form, and authenticity.  Blades that are signed are fantastic BUT signatures were copied during the period and all must be scrutinized and authenticated.  I find that judging the overall sword is first and second is the assessment of the signature or other markings.  The higher quality blades (generally) will be maker signed and dated by the blacksmith who made them but not all.

A Good Antique Japanese Tanto, circa. most likely late 16th - early 17th century,  Koto Period (800-1600), (just my opinion).  15.5" blade (with the tang), 11.5" (cutting edge forward of the "Habaki").  The tang of the blade is unsigned and has (2) holes "Mekugi-Ana".  The temper line "Hamon" is discernible and the blade overall is in fair polish with light staining, some delamination, scratches and dings from use (would greatly improve appearance and value with a professional polish).  No "Tsuba".  Matching grip "Ho", pommel-cap "Kashira", collar "Fuchi", and grip accent "Menuki" (large gilded silver flower on both sides).  Original flat black textured lacquered wood scabbard "Saya".   The tanto has a wonderful side knife "Kozuka" and engraved silver grip depicting a bird and a turtle (gold overlay).  The Kozuka's blade is signed as well.  A fantastic tanto in need of some love !

HADA (visible metal grain) - very good+ with a few minor stains, areas of light scratches, and some delamination.

HAMON (visible temper line on the cutting edge) -  wavy (gunome) and very good+.

POLISH - very good+.  Should be restored...

PERIOD - circa. most likely Koto Period (800-1600), (just my opinion).

TANG MARKINGS - unsigned.
