A Good European rapier (most likely German), circa. second quarter of the 17th Century.
33 1/2 inch single edged tapered straight blade with single central fuller extending 3/4 of the blade length.
Maker marked on both sides of blade “ANDDRA” with so called "eyelash marks". The blade exhibits multiple impact marks produced from contact with other blades from the period of use.
Iron hilt Of flattened bars, including a pair of vertically recurved quillons, outer ring guard, lower ring-guard and a pierced shell beneath (some losses), knuckle-guard with an additional bar front and rear secured to an ovoid pommel.
Full twisted and braided wire grip with “Turks Heads”. Overall length: 41”. No scabbard. A wonderful example that was definitely used but not abused...
CONDITION: All metal surfaces exhibit rust pitting (some areas worse than others) and retaining a pleasing age patina.
