A Fantastic and Rare Untouched Antique US military model 1816 W. T. Wickham Contract Flintlock musket made for the State of New Jersey SUSSEX BRIGADE with the original bayonet. The musket is all original and in its original flintlock configuration. 42.25", .69 caliber barrel struck with US Proof marks on the upper breech "U.S.", "G. F.", a "P", "S.N.J." (STATE of NEW JERSEY) stamped on the top of the breech and some other small inspector's marks visible just above the left edge of the stock. All steel furniture. The musket was made as "National Armory Bright" and has untouched and uncleaned surfaces. The lock is maker marked "M. T. WICKHAM", "PHILA". The stock is stamped "S.N.J." (STATE of NEW JERSEY) just under the rear of the side plate, "SUSSEX BRIGADE" behind the lower section of the trigger guard. Overall the stock is solid with very light scratches, dings from service and handling. A great example in good mechanical working order.
NOTE; Almost all of the Model 1816 flintlock muskets produced were converted to percussion for the Civil War. This is a rare survivor in wonderful condition. We have had several examples of this contractor's 1816 muskets but all were converted to percussion. This is the first we have encountered in its original flintlock configuration.
About the contractor to the State of New Jersey W. T. WICKHAM, Philadelphia, PA. Produced approx. 16,600 flintlock muskets between 1822-1837. This musket is the early variety with W. T. WICKHAM / PHILA in an arch under the pan.
