A Rare & Fantastic Large English Queen Anne Period Flintlock Holster Pistol
A Rare & Fantastic Large Antique English Queen Anne Period Flintlock Holster Pistol, circa. 1705-1715. 11.75", .62 cal. round iron multi-stage barrel marked with (2) oval Proofs of a small "Crown" over "GP" (Gun Makers Proof) and a small "Crown" over "V" (Viewed), a small " * " over ? (barrel marker). The convex lock has beautiful decorative engraved scrolling vines with boarder line engraving and the pan has no bridle to the frizzen. All brass furniture includes an interesting convex side plate (secured to the stock and lock plate by (3) side nail screws), early trigger guard, engraved short lobed butt cap, and a vacant wrist escutcheon. All iron parts have light rust pitting (most around the touch-hole). Wood ram rod with horn tip. The stock has fine sterling silver wire inlay in the form of a scallop shell around the barrel tang. The stock has a crack running through the front portion at the butt near the lower section of the trigger guard but overall the stock is solid with minimal scratches and dings from years of service and handling. 18.25" overall length. The pistol is in it's original flintlock configuration. A extremely rare holster pistol in fine condition that would be very difficult to improve upon and in good mechanical working order.
NOTE: The barrel tang is secured to the stock from the underside (which is an early trait). The trigger guard form with the rounded lobe finial was then adapted and used on British Royal Sea Service muskets and pistols. This form of pistol was built along the same lines as military examples for Militia and Volunteer units but higher quality for a high ranking officer or wealthy gentleman and most likely one of a pair. This pistol may have seen service in many of America's historical conflicts such as the French & Indian War (1754-1763) - American Revolutionary War, 1776-1783 !
