Civil War Union or Confederate Nonrigid Pack Pack/Knapsack
An Antique Civil War Union or Confederate Back Pack/Knapsack, c. 1853/55-early 1860's. Nonrigid frame covered in black painted canvas. Some of the leather straps are missing. A scarce civil war accoutrement to survive !
Note: These nonrigid knapsacks of rubberized or painted canvas were the commonest style used during the war. The straps could be hooked to the 1855 rifle-mans belt or crossed on the chest. Experienced soldiers shunned the extra weight of the wood framed type and adopted the nonrigid if available.
