An Excellent Antique Victorian Period Miniature Suit of European Maximilian Style Fluted Armor in the style of the 16th century
c. 19th Century.
An Excellent Antique Victorian Period Miniature Suit of European "Maximilian" style Fluted Armor in the style of the 16th century, c. 19th century. 25.5” tall overall (without the square plinth). A very good quality Maximilian fluted armor in the style of the late 16th century. The suit stands on a square wood plinth covered in old red velvet (falling apart from age). The helmet may be missing the upper visor or it was made without one. The suit has a sword (has been bent and straitened). The Victorian period (1837-1901) had a huge Gothic revival for interior décor for the wealthy. Mansions and castles were decorated with all sorts of medieval weapons and suits of armor of all sizes. Original antique arms & armor were in short supply resulting in a few companies producing very high-quality copies to fill the demand which are now very collectible antiques. The metal has some minor dents, cracks, and a mixed dark brown rust age patina. A great little suit of armor ready for display.
NOTE: This suit may have been made in the workshop of Ernst Schmidt.
Ernst Schmidt was a dealer in the 19th century who supplied the demand for ancient European arms & armor through the Victorian Period. The 19th century saw a revival of interest of objects from the Renaissance and ancient medieval cultures that influenced architecture, decoration, furnishings, art, culture, and many other things. This renewed awareness led to an intense affinity of arms and armor and from that a demand for quality affordable reproductions was born and now these items are considered antique collectibles in their own category.
