A Rare Antique Massive British Brass Barrel Ship's Swivel Blunderbuss, circa. 1800-1815. 22" brass 'cannon muzzle' barrel struck with Birmingham PROOFS on the left side of the breech. Royal Navy pattern brass furniture. Lock simply marked 'LONDON'. The blunderbuss is in it's original flintlock configuration. The stock is stable with some period repairs around the right side around the post & yoke bolt; stress cracks, scratches and dings from years of service. Iron button-head ram rod. Original iron post & yoke. The blunderbuss is all original and in good mechanical working order. 39" overall length. A rare survivor !!!
Note; Many of the Barrels and other parts on these big blunderbuss are recycled and re-purposed from older guns. The salt air and salt water took a heavy toll on any weapon out at sea. They did not waste anything...
These massive blunderbuss' were used all over the ships of the day because they could be easily moved around unlike the heavy swivel cannons. They were very effective mounted in the tops of the rigging to rain down a hail of what ever projectiles were loaded, (rocks, nails, glass, lead shot...)
The big gun comes with a later hand made iron display stand as seen in the photos.
