A Fine American/European Shell Hilt Cutlass, #3232 Edged Weapons
A Wonderful Antique American /European Shell Guard Cutlass, circa. 1740-1760. 18.25" thick curved, single fuller, single edge blade w/remnants of blade maker's marks on the right side approx. 4" above the hilt. Iron Shell Guard pattern with its thin knuckle bow, short down turned quillon and intact thumb ring; octagon polished bone grip. All iron parts and blade were exposed to the elements during the period of use resulting a deep pitting and a very dark brown/black heavy age rust patina. A great example... Type used throughout the Colonies especially favored aboard ship.
