Antique Mexican-American War - Civil War Period U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Sword, dated 1845.  35.5" single-edge blade marked on the ricasso with remnants of the mark and dated "1845" and on the other side "U.S." over "N. W. P.".  The brass guard has a break in one of the branches otherwise intact and has a dark yellow to olive color age patina and the pommel is marked "N. W. P." "6 or 9" and "- Co J".  The twisted brass wire (approx. 45% remaining) and leather (approx. 20% remaining) covering the wood grip is worn.  The blade is missing the very tip and has rust age spot patina.  Metal scabbard is missing the last 9" including the drag.
